What are NVQs?
NVQs are competence based qualifications that are judged on performance evidence as well as knowledge and understanding. Evidence is built up by producing a portfolio of what you do at work.
Who is eligible?
Anyone who is:
-
Between the age of 16-24, and
-
Working for at least 16 hours/week, and
-
Not a degree holder
What NVQ level will be right for me?
Everyone has different levels of knowledge and experience and our assessor will advise you on the suitable level for you if you are eligible for NVQs.
But in general:

If you are straight from school/college or have no experience of the particular type of work you are now doing - NVQ Level 2 is likely to be your starting point.

If you have at least one year’s experience and are in a supervisory position or manage projects - NVQ level 3 is likely to be your starting point.
What is a NVQ worth academically?
The government has stated:
NVQ Level 2 = 5 GCSEs grades A-C
NVQ Level 3 = At least 2 good A levels

How are the NVQ programmes delivered?

Employees work with an assessor to build an online portfolio of work based
evidence
-
There is no need to plan for time off work to attend a training centre
-
The assessor will visit the employee once every four-six weeks for approx one/two
hours to assess work, train and guide the employee through the programme
How long does it take to complete an NVQ?
Employees can work at their own pace. It usually takes three to nine months to
complete an NVQ.
How much do these NVQ courses cost?
The courses are fully funded by the Government and therefore they are free of charge.
