The firm
Carter Backer Winter is a firm of Chartered Accountants, and Business Advisors located in Aldgate on the London City border. Established over 50 years ago we provide the traditional audit and accountancy department, plus a number of specialist services including financial services, tax, forensic and investigative services, corporate recovery and insolvency, payroll and human resources. The firm employs over 70 staff including the
12 partners.
We like to think that we are a practice with a difference. We understand that each client is different and needs a specific approach to meet their individual set of problems. We have learnt from our clients that there is no such thing as “one size fits all” and we have developed teams who can provide tailor-made solutions for all accounting and business requirements.
We focus on client services rather than industries; however we have significant expertise in the following areas: not-for-profit, construction, information technology and systems, manufacturing and distribution, professional partnerships, and property related business.
The clients
Our clients are largely based in London and the South East, but a number are located further afield; from Channel Islands to the North of England, and overseas.
The technology
To assist in making our service prompt and efficient we have embraced new technology, as it has become available. All members of the audit team, including trainees are provided with a personal laptop to ensure they can work effectively both on and off site.
The training
Carter Backer Winter takes two trainees each year, starting in mid August. We accept applications from graduates with both relevant and non-relevant degrees. In addition to a proven academic record, we require people with excellent interpersonal skills and a genuine interest in understanding and striving to meet the needs of the client.
In addition to the professional training element of your internship you will attend practical courses with
pass; the aim being to help you develop skills and practical knowledge that will be utilised in your day to day work experience.
Unlike many large firms our trainees will fulfil a valuable and practical role from a very early stage. We work on the premise that it is important to create a strong foundation to learning and experience, and with this in mind you will spend some time in our Business Services Group; practising and understanding the processes involved in producing accounts from the bottom up. In addition you will assist with audits and more complex accounts. Being a Trainee Accountant is not for the faint hearted, balancing study and exam preparation with a full time job is very demanding. Therefore at all times you will receive support from colleagues, managers and partners. Your progress will be reviewed regularly; overseen by the HR function and the Partner responsible for training.
The process
