The three-day City & Guilds HVSO1: Limited Operation of High Voltage Power Systems course is tailored for electrical engineers, technicians and authorised personnel who need to safely enter substations and switchrooms to carry out limited switching operations up to 15 kV, in line with Electricity at Work Regulations and company safety rules.
Delivered at our high voltage training centres, City & Guilds’ HVSO1 course combines classroom and practical learning. Delegates will have the opportunity to practice their skills on HV switchgear simulations (running at intrinsically safe voltage levels) to ensure they are fully prepared for real-world limited-operation duties.
Achieving the HVSO1 Authorised Person certification equips you with the essential knowledge and skills to conduct restricted high voltage switching operations and monitor system performance safely, vital for roles in utilities, industrial sites or contract maintenance.
Our expert-led delivery blends theoretical modules with live practical switching exercises in a mock HV environment. Successful graduates gain a recognised City & Guilds competency certificate, enabling them to fulfil limited HV responsibilities under senior authorisation.
Over three days, the programme delivers safety, legislative and operational training, coupled with hands-on switching exercises in our simulated HV switchroom environment.
It’s a three-day City & Guilds accredited training programme that qualifies delegates to carry out limited high voltage switching operations according to relevant safety regulations in HV switching rooms (up to 15kV), and issue isolation documents under the supervision of a senior authorised person.
City & Guilds’ HVSO1 course is ideal for electrical engineers, maintenance technicians or site personnel (including non-electrical staff) required to enter substations or switchrooms and perform restricted HV tasks safely.
Delegates are required to complete a written exam and a practical switching test. On passing both, you’ll receive a Certificate of Competency accredited by City & Guilds; if unsuccessful or absent from assessments, you’ll receive a Certificate of Attendance.
Yes, modules include statutory requirements under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and company safety documentation procedures.
Yes, the course is open to both electrical and non-electrical personnel.
HVSO1 permits limited switching operations for authorised persons only. For issuing full Safety Permits, as a SAP, you’ll need the City & Guilds HVSO4 Safe Switching Operation of HV Power Systems for SAP Course.
