Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I start if I want to get into HV work?

Begin with an HV awareness course, such as the City & Guilds HVSO2 Safe Access to Substations & Switchrooms Course, to understand risks, regulations, and basic operational knowledge.

For career progression, you need an Authorised Person (AP) Course to operate, isolate, and work on HV systems.

Having relevant low voltage electrical knowledge and experience is often a prerequisite to any HV course.

Do you provide HV courses at client locations, including overseas?

Yes. Bespoke HV training programmes can be delivered on your own systems, tailored to your equipment and operational procedures.

Overseas training is also available, so organisations with international operations can receive the same practical, site-specific instruction.

Please contact us or view our business training solutions page for more information.

How does high voltage training ensure safe and compliant electrical work?

Completion of a suitably rigorous High Voltage course is strongly recommended (and may be necessary) to help ensure compliance with health‑and‑safety legislation, in particular the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Under those regulations, employers (and other duty‑holders) have a legal obligation to ensure that anyone working on or near electrical systems has the requisite technical knowledge or experience to prevent danger or injury.

Regulation 16 of the EAW requires that individuals working on electrical systems must be ‘competent’ — this may be demonstrated via relevant training, experience, supervision, or a combination thereof, depending on the nature of the work. While the regulations do not explicitly define ‘high voltage’ or mandate a specific training syllabus, industry‑recognised HV training courses (e.g. ‘Authorised Person – High Voltage‘) are widely accepted means of demonstrating competence for more hazardous work.

Our HV training courses combine compliance with statutory requirements, guidance on safe working practices (for example those set out in HSE guidance), and industry best practices relevant to the specific system and environment. This helps ensure personnel, including employees or freelancers, are properly prepared to work safely with high voltage systems.

High Voltage Courses Explained

High Voltage training is essential for electricians, ROV technicians, and other personnel working in industries such as offshore, rail, petrochemical, and utilities. Completing an HV course ensures you work safely and comply with health and safety legislation, including the EAWR (See our Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAWR) course). Employers have a legal duty to ensure staff possess the knowledge and experience required to safely operate or maintain high voltage systems.

Our programmes include HV Authorised Person (AP) training, designed for those who will work on or near HV equipment, operate isolated systems, and manage permits to work. AP courses provide practical, hands-on experience in switchgear operation and safe isolation procedures, enabling personnel to demonstrate competence in line with regulatory requirements.

We also offer a Switchroom and Substation Access course, which focuses on safely navigating and working within live HV environments. This course provides an ideal entry point into HV work for electricians, site engineers, and maintenance staff who need to access HV switchrooms or substations as part of their roles, ensuring they understand the hazards and operate in full compliance with industry standards.

Refresher training is equally important to keep skills current and maintain compliance with evolving industry practices. By completing accredited HV courses, personnel enhance safety, maintain competence, and improve career prospects, opening opportunities in specialist sectors that rely on skilled high voltage professionals.
