Before sitting your 18th Edition exam, it’s important to understand the assessment format, how questions are structured and what you’ll need to achieve to pass.
The current City & Guilds 2382-26 Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations assessment is based on the latest version of BS 7671:2018 (2026) and tests your understanding of the IET Wiring Regulations and their practical application.
How Many Questions Are There?
The City & Guilds 18th Edition exam consists of:
- 60 multiple-choice questions
- 2 hours to complete the assessment
- Open-book format using BS 7671
Although the exam allows you to refer to your copy of the Wiring Regulations, success depends on being able to quickly find the information you need. This is why completing 18th Edition mock exams before your assessment is such an important part of your preparation.
What Is the Pass Mark?
The pass mark for the City & Guilds 2382-26 assessment is 60%. This means you need to answer at least 36 out of 60 questions correctly to achieve a pass.
While the pass mark may seem achievable, many candidates underestimate the importance of exam technique. The assessment is designed to test your ability to interpret BS 7671 and locate the correct regulations efficiently, rather than simply recall information from memory.
Is the Exam Open Book?
Yes. The assessment is open book, meaning you can use your copy of BS 7671 during the exam. However, you cannot rely on simply looking up every answer from scratch.
Successful candidates are familiar with the layout of the Wiring Regulations, understand where key information is located and have practised answering questions within the time limit.
Purchase a copy of the IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition (Orange) Amendment 4:2026 to BS7671:2018 before taking the course.
How Long Should You Spend on Each Question?
With 60 questions and 120 minutes available, you’ll have around two minutes per question.
Good time management is essential. If you become stuck on a question, it is usually better to flag it, move on and return to it later rather than using valuable time at the beginning of the exam.
Why Take an 18th Edition Mock Exam?
A realistic 18th Edition mock exam helps you experience the pressure of working through 60 questions within a fixed time limit.
By completing practice tests before your assessment, you can:
- Become familiar with the question style
- Improve your speed when navigating BS 7671
- Identify topics that require further revision
- Build confidence before exam day
- Practise managing your time effectively
The closer your practice sessions are to the real exam format, the better prepared you will be when sitting the official City & Guilds assessment.
What Topics to Expect in the 18th Edition Exam

The current City & Guilds 2382-26 exam will include questions from across BS 7671:2018 (2026), including topics updated by Amendment 4.
