Already Have Your 2382 Qualification?
One of the most common questions we are hearing is, “do I need to take another exam?”
If you already hold the City & Guilds 2382 18th Edition qualification, your existing qualification remains valid. However, your knowledge needs updating.
You should consider how you want to demonstrate that your knowledge of the Amendment 4 has been updated. While some electricians may choose to update their knowledge through professional development activities, many will want formal evidence that they have been assessed against the latest Wiring Regulations.
This guide explains when the City & Guilds 2382-26 qualification is recommended and whether the 1-day Amendment 4 update course or the full 3-day 2382-26 course is the right option for you.
BS 7671 Amendment 4 Changes

BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 is the latest amendment to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
Amendment 4 introduces changes that electricians need to understand, including updates relating to areas such as:
- Stationary battery energy storage systems
- Power over Ethernet (PoE)
- Information and communication technology systems
- Earthing and bonding requirements
- Other technical changes affecting modern electrical installations
For electricians, the important point is not simply knowing that Amendment 4 exists. It is understanding how these changes affect the way electrical installations are designed, installed, inspected and tested.
Update Your 18th Edition Knowledge Now
Your 2382-18 or 2382-22 qualification remains valid, but the Wiring Regulations continue to evolve.
From 15 October 2026, BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 becomes the current edition of the Wiring Regulations. If you are designing, installing, inspecting or testing electrical installations, it’s important that you understand and apply the Amendment 4 changes.
Updating your knowledge helps you:
- Work to the current edition of BS 7671
- Understand the latest regulatory changes
- Support employer, contractor or assessment requirements
- Demonstrate ongoing professional development
- Apply the Wiring Regulations with confidence
For electricians who already hold the 2382 qualification, updating to Amendment 4 isn’t about replacing your qualification, it’s about ensuring your knowledge reflects the latest requirements. For those inspecting, testing and certifying electrical installations, keeping up to date with Amendment 4 also helps demonstrate competence and ensures certification is completed in accordance with the current edition of BS 7671.
Choose the Right Training Route

There are different ways electricians may choose to update their knowledge, depending on their current qualification level and what evidence they require.
At PASS, we have chosen not to offer a CPD-only Amendment 4 update course. Instead, both of our training routes follow the City & Guilds 2382-26 qualification route and include the full 2-hour online examination.
As City & Guilds is the leading awarding body for electrical qualifications, we believe that if you are already taking the time to complete an Amendment 4 update, it makes sense to gain recognised qualification evidence at the same time.

Rather than offering a CPD-only Amendment 4 update, our training includes the City & Guilds 2382-26 examination.
If you are already taking a day out to attend an Amendment 4 update course, completing the City & Guilds 2382 qualification at the same time gives you recognised qualification evidence that can support employers, contractors and competent person schemes.
Compliance for CPS, Employers and Other Bodies

Requirements can vary between employers, contractors and competent person schemes.
From 15 October 2026, BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 becomes the current edition of the Wiring Regulations. Electricians carrying out notifiable work should have access to the latest edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (Orange Book) and understand the Amendment 4 changes.
Bodies such as building control will look for all notifiable work to be carried out to Amendment 4, so it is in electricians’ best interests to ensure their knowledge is fully up to date. Completing the City & Guilds 2382-26 qualification provides recognised evidence that your Wiring Regulations knowledge has been updated and assessed.
Holding the latest 2382-26 qualification can also give you greater flexibility if you change employer, contractor or competent person scheme, providing clear evidence that your knowledge is aligned with the current edition of BS 7671.
If you are unsure what evidence is required, check directly with your employer, contractor or competent person scheme.
Amendment 4 Update Course FAQs
15 October 2026 is an important date for electricians working with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
After this date, BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 becomes the current version of the Wiring Regulations.
However, this does not mean every electrician needs to complete the full 18th Edition course again.
If You Already Hold 2382-18 or 2382-22
Your qualification remains valid.
You do not need to restart with a three-day course simply because Amendment 4 becomes the current edition.
Instead, you can choose an update route that matches your requirements:
- A 1-day Amendment 4 update course with the City & Guilds 2382-26 exam
- Other knowledge update activities where appropriate
The one-day update course is intensive and is designed for electricians with a good working knowledge of the 18th Edition, including Amendments 2 and 3. The exam covers all three amendments, with the course focusing on Amendment 4 and providing some recap of the previous changes.
For electricians who want formal evidence of their updated knowledge, the 2382-26 exam provides a recognised qualification route.
If You Do Not Hold an 18th Edition Qualification
The full three-day City & Guilds 2382-26 course remains the appropriate route to gain your qualification.
This gives you the complete knowledge required to understand BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 and successfully complete the examination.
Our 1-day Amendment 4 update course will continue to be available after 15 October 2026. So, if you already hold the 2382 qualification, you can still choose the update course at a later date rather than repeating the full three-day 18th Edition course.
The main difference between the previous 2382 qualifications and the 2382-26 qualification is that 2382-26 is aligned with the latest version of the Wiring Regulations, BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, and includes the changes introduced by Amendments 2, 3 and 4.
If you already hold the 2382 qualification, it remains valid and you do not need to complete the full 18th Edition course again. However, completing the 2382-26 qualification provides recognised evidence that your knowledge has been updated and assessed against the latest requirements.
For most electricians who already hold 2382-22, the 1-day Amendment 4 update course with the City & Guilds 2382-26 exam is the quickest and most practical way to update their qualification.
