Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the 18th Edition for ECS or Competent Person Schemes (CPS)?

In most cases, an up-to-date qualification in the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) is required or expected when applying for, renewing, or maintaining registration with the ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme) or a Competent Person Scheme (CPS).

ECS and CPS organisations expect electricians and installers to demonstrate current knowledge of BS 7671, as it confirms you are working to recognised industry standards. The 2382-26 18th Edition Amendment 4 course is the current qualification that reflects the latest requirements and is widely accepted as evidence of up-to-date regulatory knowledge.

If you already hold an earlier version such as 2382-22 or Amendment 3, you may still be registered, but you could be asked to update your qualification at renewal or reassessment to ensure your knowledge reflects the current edition of the wiring regulations.

When does Amendment 4 come into effect?

Amendment 4 to the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018+A4:2026) is introduced on 15 April 2026, following a transition period from the previous amendment. During this time, both the existing and updated requirements may be referenced depending on training and assessment arrangements.

From 15 October 2026, Amendment 4 becomes the current edition of BS 7671 used across the industry, meaning new electrical work, training, and assessment are expected to align with the updated requirements. After this date, previous amendments are no longer considered current practice for new installations.

Will completing a course on Amendment 4 be mandatory?

If you are registered with a competent person scheme or working as an electrical installer, you are expected to demonstrate that your knowledge is up to date with the current edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). In practice, this means holding or updating to a qualification that reflects the latest amendment, as assessors and scheme providers want to see current and relevant training.

For existing registrants, you may be asked to evidence up-to-date knowledge when you are reassessed, renew your registration, or undertake periodic assessment. Completing an updated course ensures your qualification remains aligned with current industry expectations and the latest version of BS 7671.

Is the 2382-26 course hard to pass?

Not if you prepare. We guide you through the content, provide practice questions, and ensure you understand how to use the regs book. The exam is open book and multiple choice.

Do I need this course to be an electrician?

Yes—most employers and regulatory bodies require electricians to hold the 18th Edition qualification to prove they’re working to current standards.

Do I need to do this if I already hold a 17th Edition certificate?

Yes, standards have changed significantly with 18th Edition. You need to be up to date to remain compliant.

Can I do this course online?

Yes, we have an 18th Edition Online Course which is available for those with 17th Edition or earlier qualifications.
